DALLAS — Officials are investigating after they say at least two coyotes have been found shot and killed in the Lochwood neighborhood in Dallas since August.
Dallas Animal Services says three coyotes have been found dead in the neighborhood in east Dallas since August, two of which have been confirmed shot. The death of one of the coyotes is undetermined because of premature disposal, according to Dallas Animal Services.
Coyotes, which the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department classifies as a nongame species, can be hunted with a license, according to the department. There are no closed seasons, bag limits or possession limits for nongame species, according to the department.
Our content partners at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram report a hunting license isn’t required to hunt depredating or plundering coyotes on private property, as long as the hunter has authorization from the landowner.
According to Texas Health and Safety Code, a coyote attacking another animal or that has recently attacked another animal can be killed by any person who sees the attack, the attacked animal's owner or a person acting on behalf of the owner if the owner or person knows about the attack.
Dallas residents are asked to report coyote sightings by calling 469-676-9813. If the coyote appears to be sick or injured, residents are asked to make an injured wildlife report by calling 311.
