IRVING -- It looks like lightning is to blame for a fire that tore through more than a dozen apartments in Irving. Investigators are now waiting on the National Weather Service to make that call.
Witnesses at the Estrada Oaks Apartments say they heard what sounded like two explosions just before 5 a.m. It jolted many of them out of bed.
"I thought someone set a bomb off," said Misty Paudyal. "It was that loud, and then the second one hit and then you [saw] smoke and flames. It was bad."
Flames quickly started shooting through the roof. Most of it is now singed off. It took 37 firefighters and six chief officers a little more than an hour to get things under control.
Sixteen apartment units were damaged leaving 27 residents in need of a new home for now. The Red Cross is on scene helping those folks out as firefighters continue their investigation.
Luckily no one was hurt, but the damage does prove the power of Mother Nature.
There is no word yet on how much the cleanup will cost.
