Irving police officer dies in off-duty motorcycle crash, police say

Irving police are investigating a crash that killed Irving Police Officer Jerome Scholz, according to a press release.

IRVING, Texas — An Irving police officer died in an off-duty motorcycle crash, according to a press release from Irving police. 

Officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle around 4:40 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 in the 7800 block of Valley View Lane in Irving at Interstate 635, according to a press release from Irving police. 

Officers found Jerome Scholz, 38, was hit in the crash, the release states. Scholz was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries, police say. 

Scholz was a five-year veteran of the Irving Police Department. Before joining the department, he served in the United States Army, the release states. 

Police are investigating the incident, according to the release. However, the preliminary investigation found the other driver involved in the crash failed to yield the right-of-way to Scholz while turning, police said. 

The department will provide additional information about funeral arrangements in future updates, the release states.
