DALLAS – At the corner of Jefferson and Marsalis, an historical marker sits outside Oak Cliff United Methodist Church. You can't miss it.

"We've been in this community helping and serving and doing ministry for a long, long time," said Karen Araya, a member and administrator at the church.

Depending on who you ask, it is either a tough time or an exciting time for some members and the pastor, as they prepare to close the church building. You do not have to look too hard to see why the members made the decision to move from the old building.

"The building needs foundation repairs," said Pastor Edgar Bazan.

Outside, the walls are crumbling. Inside, some of the walls are cracking. Above picturesque stained-glass windows, you will see the sanctuary's ceiling is peeling.

The elevator in the three-story building needs repair. Pastor Bazan said the electrical wiring also needs work.

"There are just a lot of things," he said. "Everywhere you look, there are things that need to be done."

The pastor said getting the building to where it needs to be could cost the church about $3 million — money its 120 members do not have.

That is why Oak Cliff United Methodist's members took a vote. During a recent church conference, its members decided to close the doors of the building and merge with nearby Tyler Street United Methodist Church.

"They offer pretty much the same kind of ministry that we have been offering here, and more," Pastor Bazan said.

Sunday, June 28, will be the last service members of the 128-year-old church will attend inside the sanctuary. Bazan said he's excited about the transition.

"If we need to leave the building — the bricks — behind in order to continue the life of the church, we will do it," he said.

The pastor says they all know Oak Cliff United Methodist Church is not about the building. It is about the people.

Church workers say they will continue operating some programs from the current building. You can find out more about the church's plans by calling the office at 214-943-4328.
