Cause of First Baptist Dallas church fire to remain undetermined, officials say

The church said in a video Tuesday that it continues to make great progress in restoring the campus.
First Baptist Dallas said beams and scaffolding are being installed to shore up the walls of the 1891-built sanctuary.

DALLAS — Dallas Fire-Rescue confirmed to WFAA Friday morning that the cause of the fire at the First Baptist Dallas church two months ago will remain undetermined.

The cause of the fire at the downtown Dallas church was first classified as undetermined on July 20, the day after the fire happened, but officials added, "we reserve the right to change or supplement this finding based on new or additional information which may subsequently be determined."

First Baptist Dallas released a video update on its Facebook page on Tuesday, where it said it's been cleaning the Criswell Center and will continue restoring that building to full operation.

"Church family, we continue to make great progress in restoring our campus," the church said on Facebook. "As we continue that vital work, we’re so blessed to have the space we need for worship, for community, and for parking."

Officials said at least 100 firefighters were on scene for more than three hours for the four-alarm fire at the building at 1707 San Jacinto St.

DFR said at the time they believed the blaze started in the basement.

Officials said no one was injured in the fire.

The building has been around since 1890, Pastor Robert Jeffress said after the fire broke out, and was the home of the church before they moved into a new center about 12 years ago.

"I had just left the church a little bit after 6 p.m. when we got word that the church was on fire, our historic sanctuary," Jeffress said at the time.
