Fire destroys Dallas apartment building

Six apartments were destroyed in a four-alarm fire at a Northwest Dallas apartment complex Monday morning.

DALLAS — Six apartments were destroyed in a four-alarm fire at a Northwest Dallas apartment complex Monday morning.

Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to an alarm at the Southwind Apartments in the 9800 block of Brockbank Drive at about 10:35 a.m.

One person was taken to the hospital for exposure to smoke, but that person is expected to be OK.

All six units in the apartment complex at the north end of Love Field Airport were declared a total loss. Two of the apartments were vacant.

Firefighters say it took about three hours to get control of the blaze.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans said the fire started accidentally after someone welding pipes in the building ignited combustible materials.

The American Red Cross has been notified to assist those displaced. The building, now 48 years old, will have to be demolished.
