Family uses knife to fight off loose dog during vicious attack

A man is nursing injuries after a loose and aggressive dog attacked him and his mother in southern Dallas.

DALLAS – A man is nursing injuries after a loose and aggressive dog attacked him and his mother in southern Dallas.

Elizabeth Kilgore and her son Cody say their neighbor’s loose pit bull bit through a gate and ambushed them in their backyard on Kempwood Lane Wednesday afternoon.

“He was trying to get Cody's neck,” Kilgore explained.

The woman says the pit bull first jumped on her, taking her by surprise. She says she screamed for help and her son Cody rushed outside.

The dog locked its teeth on Cody as he tried saving his mom.

"Physically, I'm in a lot of pain,” Cody said. “I'm in a lot of pain.”

"I told someone, "Dude, get something and just stab the dog,' to go ahead and get it and kill it because it was not going down without a fight," he continued.

Cody now has bite marks and injuries to his leg and foot.

The family said it all happened so fast, Elizabeth grabbed a knife and stabbed the dog as it was biting Cody.

"He was hurting my kid,” Kilgore said. “I didn't know what to do.”

The injured dog ran off into the neighborhood.

The incident happened steps away from Kleberg Elementary School’s campus and playground. A spokesperson from Dallas ISD said police urged the school to shelter in place until officers were able to contain the dog.

It didn't take long for officers to track down the dog. It roamed a few blocks away.

A recent overhaul of the troubled Dallas Animal Services now has two Dallas Police commanders running the division. Officers who have been working in conjunction with Animal Control say loose animal calls are increasing.

Investigators are putting the owners of the dog that attacked the Kilgore family on notice about the bite.

Elizabeth says she does not want to see anyone else get hurt.

"People, if you can't take care of your dogs, please don't get one," she said.

Late Wednesday afternoon, staff at Dallas Animal Services confirmed the pit bull involved in the Kempwood attack died from the stabbing injuries it suffered.
