Families mourn deaths of Dallas Baptist University students

Dallas Baptist University is mourning the loss of three students, and a Cleburne family is grieving for a lost son and brother.

DALLAS -- Dallas Baptist University is mourning the loss of three students, and a Cleburne family is grieving for a lost son and brother.

Early this morning, Justin Schubert, 22, was riding near campus in the passenger seat of a Chevy pickup with two dorm mates, Will Smith, of Tyler, and Djordje Sarenac, of Belgrade, Serbia.

Police say the vehicle hit a curb and went off the road. It eventually overturned, killing all three.

"It's probably one of the worst things that parents can find out is that they've lost a child," said Russ Schubert, Justin's father. "We're grieving for the other families too. This is a difficult thing to lose three young men."

Saturday, the Schubert family shared memories of their son, who was completing his sophomore year at DBU and was studying communications. They said he was fun-loving, warm, and a friend to everybody.

"He had lots of aspirations of being an actor," said his father. "He was quite a character. Very funny. He had such a great personality about him. He was just a really fine young man."

There was an outpouring of grief from his fellow students today, who shared their own memories on Justin's Facebook page. DBU officials are planning a memorial for the three students Sunday night in the Pilgrim Chapel on campus. They have also made grief counselors available.

"This for the students is a rough day," said Jay Harley, the university's dean of spiritual life. "As a Christian university, we have the hope of Christ even as we grieve at a very difficult time."

For the Schubert family, it's a second deep loss. Another son died of a brain tumor when he was just three years old. But the family also finds comfort in their own strong faith and belief that the brothers are together.

"Justin loved God," said Russ Schubert. "And I'll tell you right now, I can't imagine what parents would go through that did not have the hope that we have as believers that Justin is in Heaven."
