'Enough' message Omni Dallas Hotel reflects collective grief

DALLAS — The display is always brightly illuminated on the Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas, but rarely has it been any clearer than the "enough" message displayed the last two nights.

The Omni Hotel is the front door to downtown Dallas, and in recent weeks, has been the gateway through which the city has displayed collective grief.

The hotel, owned by the city of Dallas, has displayed a variety of flags and messages after violent attacks in Istanbul, Turkey; Orlando; Nice, France and Baton Rouge.

The Omni was lit up with the "One Dallas" message for eight days after a sniper killed five Dallas officers on July 7.

The "enough" message comes directly after a gunman killed three Baton Rouge area police officers on Sunday.

One day earlier, the hotel displayed the same sentiment "Assez," French for "enough," after 84 people, including two Texans, were killed in an attack on Nice on Bastille Day.

Pat Anderson has programmed all the visual displays on the hotel since in opened in November 2011.

"This facade represents Dallas," Anderson said.

Anderson is an accountant by day, but spends most evenings coming up with display ideas for the 23-story canvas.

On his most recent display:

"I think I represent more than myself, the Omni or the people of Dallas - really all of mankind when I say "enough in enough," he said. "This really has become beyond ridiculous and it's enough."

He says he displayed a waving American flag in April 2013 after the Boston Marathon bombing.

"I heard from people in Boston, they liked it," Anderson said.

He says the flag of South Africa was his first memorial display from another country when Nelson Mandela passed away in December 2013.

But the rate of flag displays has picked up dramatically over the last nine months, starting with the coordinated terror attack in Paris in November.

In the succeeding months, the flag of Belgium, Pakistan, Turkey and the state flag of Florida have been displayed following acts of violence.

"The city of Dallas feels for these people - not only the people of Dallas - but for events outside the city of Dallas," Anderson said.
