The December 26 tornadoes that devastated parts of North Texas have now claimed their 12th life.
A family spokesperson said Leo Mota died late Friday night after being gravely injured in Garland.
Mota was driving home from work in Rockwall on Interstate 30 when the EF-4 twister hit, blowing his lawn service truck and trailer off the freeway. Jose Oviedo Juarez, who was in the same truck, died on December 26.
Mota suffered severe brain trauma and had been on life support at The Medical Center of Plano. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Mota, a resident of Garland, becomes the ninth motorist killed in that city as a result of the tornado outbreak. His family established a GoFundMe account to help pay for medical expenses.
The violent storms killed three others in Collin County.
Viewers posted touching tributes to Mota on WFAA's Facebook page after hearing the news of his passing. One viewer described Mota as "a down right awesome human being" and shared an anecdote about the hard-working man.
Multiple commenters shared stories of Mota working on their lawns even with a broken foot.
"He worked night and day to provide for his family," Dana Hart-Ball wrote. "So, it didn't surprise me that he was working on 12/26. Last month I came home to beautiful flowers planted outside my front door. When I called him to thank him, He simply said, 'Miss Dana, I just wanted to do something nice for you.'
"That's the man he was, full of love and just a down right awesome human being. We are sad, we will miss you Leo. Forever in our hearts."
Wanda Hutson said she is "a better person for having known him."
"He touched so many in his everyday life. His family was everything to him," she wrote. "If he said he was going to do something, you knew it was as good as done. I am a better person for having known him. May the Lord keep his family wrapped in his loving arms as they walk this unfathomable path."
