Large fire burns in Northwest Dallas, damages six commercial buildings overnight, officials say

A large fire burning near Dallas Love Field knocked out power to over 1,400 people Tuesday morning.

DALLAS — A large fire damaged six commercial buildings overnight and caused power to be cut to over 1,000 people Tuesday, fire officials said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to reports of a fire at 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct 21, near a commercial business complex located at 1738 Empire Central in Northwest Dallas, fire officials said in a press release. Crews were still at the scene at 6:30 a.m.

When the first fire engine arrived, they found multiple wooden pallets burning and the fire was already in an advanced stage, officials said.

High winds in the area caused the fire to spread to surrounding buildings and the fire was upgraded to a three-alarm response, the release states. About 60-70 firefighters responded to the scene and WFAA viewers reported seeing the flames from miles away overnight.

No injuries have been reported, officials said.

At least six commercial buildings and a transfer station were damaged by the fire, officials said. The fire was eventually contained to an area just south of Brook Hollow Golf Club and fire crews were still fighting the fire around  6 a.m. Multiple pieces of heavy machinery remain on the scene including four aerial ladder trucks, working to knock out what remains of the fire, the release states.

Hundreds of people were without power as a result of the fire Tuesday morning, according to the Oncor outage map. Oncor intentionally cut power to protect firefighters, a representative on the scene told WFAA. At its peak, over 1,400 people were impacted by the outage.

"We’ve decreased the number of customers impacted to about 100 and will restore as soon as we are cleared and able to safely do so," Oncor said in a statement.

In a statement, Love Field Airport said its operations were not impacted by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
