Prominent philanthropist and champion of the arts in Dallas, Margaret Crow, has died. Crow was the widow of prominent businessman Trammell Crow, but she was also a well known civic leader in her own right.
According to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office, she died Friday evening of natural causes. Crow was 94 years old.
Crow was born in Dallas on May 17, 1919. She attended the prestigious Hockaday School for Girls. After graduating from the University of Texas she lived nearly her entire adult life in Highland Park.
Margaret Crowe married real estate mogul Trammell Crow in 1942. She hosted numerous world leaders, foreign dignitaries, business associates at her home over the years. She was a member of the Junior League of Dallas.
After her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she pledged $1.2 million to fund research and support geriatric programs at UT Southwestern. He died in January of 2009 in Tyler, Texas.
Upon learning of her death Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern Medical Center, shared the following statement with News 8:
'Margaret Crow, together with her family, was a generous benefactor and great friend of UT Southwestern Medical Center. We are especially grateful for support provided by her and her late husband Trammell Crow that made it possible to establish the Margaret and Trammell Crow Distinguished Chair in Alzheimer's and Geriatric Research at UT Southwestern.On behalf of the entire UT Southwestern community, I extend condolences to the Crow family.'
Crow and her husband traveled the world and were known for their love and support of the arts. The Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, located in the downtown Dallas Arts District, is a showcase of paintings, sculptures and architectural items collected by the couple.
She is survived by five children, 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A public memorial service will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church; the date and time are pending.
The Crow family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Margaret and Trammell Crow Chair for Alzheimer's and Geriatric Research at Southwestern Medical Foundation in Dallas, The Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, or The Hockaday School.
