Dallas City Council approves reducing speed limit on a busy stretch of U.S. 75/Central Expressway

The city council also voted to reduce the speed limit on some other busy roadways Wednesday.

DALLAS — The Dallas City Council Wednesday voted to reduce the speed limit on a busy portion of U.S. 75/Central Expressway.

The speed limit will be reduced from 70 mph to 65 mph on U.S. 75 from Mockingbird Lane to Woodall Rogers Freeway.

Dallas City Council member Paul Ridley said he asked the Texas Department of Transportation to conduct a speed study on Central Expressway after news reports about drivers exceeding 100 mph on the highway.

“I want to thank TXDOT for promptly conducting a speed survey and deciding this was a good thing for the city of Dallas,” Ridley said.

Central Expressway made national headlines after reports earlier this year about the crash involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice on the highway. Police said both Rice's Lamborghini and SMU cornerback Teddy Knox Knox's Corvette were traveling over 115 miles per hour just before that crash.

The Dallas City Council also Wednesday voted to reduce the speed limit on some other busy roadways, including:

  • Great Trinity Forest Way from Bonnie View Road/Sunnyvale Street to Wadsworth Drive to 40 mph
  • Great Trinity Forest Way from Wadsworth Drive to Pemberton Hill Road to about 45 mph
  • Great Trinity Forest Way from Pemberton Hill Road to C.F. Hawn Freeway to 40 mph
  • Ledbetter Drive from I-35E to Bonnie View Road/Sunnyvale Street to 40 mph
  • Buckner Boulevard from Edgelake Drive to U.S. Route 175 to about 40 mph

“The goal is to reduce speed limits on significant portions of Loop 12 and I think it’s an important step in addressing the dangerous conditions on one of our city’s most accident-prone state highways,” said Dallas City Council member Jaime Resendez. “Today’s vote signifies our ongoing commitment to reducing preventable accidents and fatalities.”

“I want to encourage everybody, please drive the speed limit,” council member Paula Blackmon said.

The Dallas City Council in 2022 approved a Vision Zero resolution with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and reducing the number of serious traffic-related injuries by half by 2030.

The changes haven’t gone into effect yet and won’t until TXDOT changes the speed limit signage.
