The Dallas Convention and Event Services Department is seeking construction management services for additional parts of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center expansion project.
The request for qualifications for construction manager at risk services for the third and fourth components of the nearly $3 billion redevelopment opened Aug. 30 and will close Sept. 20. The requests will move the project from conceptual designs to implementable construction plans, according to the department.
The Dallas City Council awarded Washington-headquartered McKissack & McKissack and Dallas-based Dikita Enterprises Inc. contracts worth about a combined $17 million for the first two components in February.
Component three of the project centers on renovating the Dallas Memorial Arena and includes modernizing seating and lighting, preserving historical elements of the facility and improving accessibility of the space. The fourth component focuses on reconstructing the Black Academy of Arts and Letters and will expand the academy for cultural exhibitions.
Construction on the rebuild project began June 26, and the overall redevelopment will expand exhibition halls by 76,000 square feet, nearly triple its meeting space, double ballroom space and feature seven total components.
Supporters backing the expansion of the center previously said the project will elevate the city as a top designation for conventions and adapt to the modern convention business. Ahead of its 2028 scheduled completion, 41 conventions signed lease agreements to host events at the reconstructed site starting in 2029 and could create an estimated $658 million in direct spending.
