Dallas County extends early voting hours following first-day fiasco

This change affects hours at all early voting locations from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1

DALLAS COUNTY, Texas — Following a less-than-stellar first day of early voting in Dallas County, the county's Commissioners Court has cast its own vote to extend early voting hours across all locations.

According to Friday's agenda for a specially called meeting, the Commissioners Court voted to change early voting hours in Dallas County from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.

These changes will go into effect on Wednesday, Oct. 30 and last through Nov. 1.

According to a court order, one potential impact that had to be considered in the meeting was the financial aspect of it as it will cost more money for workers and facility rentals.

During the first day of early voting in Dallas County, many waited in lines for hours as problems with the digital books used to check in voters caused delays, Dallas County Elections Administrator Heider Garcia confirmed.

According to the county, the sign-in software kept glitching, which forced poll workers to reboot the system constantly.

Following this mishap, Garcia acknowledged the frustration of voters.

"A big apology," Garcia said. "Obviously, [Monday] was not our finest day."
