DALLAS COUNTY, Texas — Dallas County residents are receiving calls from scammers asking for money while claiming to be Dallas County law enforcement.
The Dallas County Criminal District Attorney’s Office is warning residents against falling for the scam, according to a press release. Callers claiming to be with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office or other law enforcement are telling people there is a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for grand jury duty and asking for payment immediately to avoid arrest.
Law enforcement will never ask for payment over the phone or through wire transfers and gift cards, the release states. If residents get a call about a criminal or civil accusation that is unfamiliar, it probably isn’t true.
Officials are urging residents who receive a possibly fraudulent call to contact law enforcement and verify the call. Don’t confirm identifying information to scammers, the release states.
If you’re a victim of the scam, contact your local law enforcement agency, officials urge.
