Dallas Animal Services is over capacity and offering gift cards with dog adoptions until Sunday

Dallas Animal Services says it's at 139% capacity for dogs.

DALLAS — Friends of Dallas Animal Services is offering a $50 Petco gift card to the first 75 people who adopt a dog from the shelter through Sunday.

Dallas Animal Services, like many shelters across the country, says it’s seeing a high intake rate for dogs and has reached 139% of its canine capacity. Last weekend alone, DAS says it received 161 dogs from Friday to Sunday

“We have a robust foster program with more than 1,000 pets in foster homes, and our adoptions have been steady, but that simply hasn’t been enough to keep up with the sheer volume of intake,” said Sarah Sheek, Assistant General. “We are trying every strategy we can to find positive outcomes, and we’re asking the community to come out this weekend to help us save lives.”

Dallas Animal Services says it remains committed to achieving a 90% live release rate, part of its BeDallas90 campaign, and achieved the 90% benchmark for the fiscal year 2019-2020. In January 2024, the live release rate was 85% for dogs and cats.

Dallas Animal Services is open at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 1 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
