A witness is coming forward with new information on the Dallas Police ambush attacker Micah Johnson.
Red Oak resident D'Orsay Belk says he encountered Johnson at a Mesquite gun range just days before the attack in downtown Dallas.
"What got my attention was how loud the blast was,” said Belk. “I recall how loud the weapon was and I started paying attention to him. And he was acting frustrated, too."
Belk said Johnson introduced himself. But some things weren't right.
The loud gun, the vocal frustrations, and then something else which has since come back to haunt him.
Belk says Johnson seemed obsessed with a new scope that he had just bought. In fact he even handed him the weapon and told him to try it out. Belk says he declined. He says things just didn't seem right.
Another red flag, according to Belk, he says Johnson had two 30-round ammunition magazines taped together and loaded in his weapon.
"It brought a flag for me because you don't do that at the range,” said Belk. “That’s only for a quick re-load. You are not in combat mode at the shooting range, you are not quickly trying to load a magazine at a range when you are firing a the prescribed pace.”
D'Orsay did not seek out News 8. We found him.
He says he's familiar with combat practices because he served in Iraq in the Gulf War.
He remembers Johnson as an otherwise normal kid and left thinking little more of his encounter, until last Friday, when the cop killer's picture was released.
We also showed him a picture of the shooter's gun. Johnson said it’s the one Johnson was using at the range.
He says he is sickened by the thought of Johnson standing next to him, bragging about his new scope at a gun range just over a mile from Johnson’s house in Mesquite.
"The way he was sighting that weapon,” said Belk. “He was getting ready for something."
That something turned into one of the darkest days in Dallas history.
