FARMERSVILLE Two teens have been arrested for a vandalism attack that closed Farmersville Junior High School and forced its students to attend classes at three other district campuses.
Vandals broke into the school hours before classes began Tuesday and started a fire in a trash can in one of the bathrooms. The heat from the fire caused water pipes to burst. Ironically, the water that spewed from the broken pipes put the fire out. However, it flooded 90 percent of the school.
Farmersville ISD administrators had a disaster plan in place. Eighth graders attended classes today at Farmersville High School. Seventh graders went to class at the Intermediate campus and sixth graders went to Tatum Elementary.
Police arrested two 16 year old suspects. One was arrested Tuesday night while the other was taken into custody this morning. One of the suspects has confessed to the crime. Both are in custody in the Collin County Juvenile Detention Center and will be charged with arson and felony criminal mischief.
Police did not reveal where they went to school or their names because of how young they are.
Work crews are at the school, mopping up and making repairs. District officials say they don't know how long it will take before students can return to classes.
Farmersville is located about 18 miles east of McKinney.
