IED wrapped in black tape discovered at McKinney cemetery, sheriff's office says

It's unclear how long the IED had been in the area or who had left it there.

MCKINNEY, Texas — Reports of a "possible pipe bomb" found at a McKinney cemetery prompted a bomb squad response Thursday morning, according to the Collin County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived at Scott Cemetery off County Road 161 just after 9:30 a.m. and found an IED wrapped in black tape, officials said.

The sheriff's department said the Plano Police Department's bomb squad was called in to assist in the call, and that they determined that "the object was, in fact, an improvised explosive device."

The bomb squad then secured the area and safely disposed of the device, the sheriff's office said.

"Our sincere appreciation to the Plano Texas Police Department Bomb Squad for their rapid and effective response," the sheriff's office wrote in a Facebook post Thursday morning.
