Evacuation ordered for part of Melissa after natural gas main break

Construction crews working near Melissa Road and Fannin Street accidentally damaged the gas main Tuesday morning, officials say.

MELISSA, Texas — An evacuation has been ordered for a portion of Melissa after construction crews accidentally damaged a natural gas main on Tuesday morning, officials say.

According to a Facebook post by the Melissa Fire Department, crews were working near Melissa Road and Fannin Street where the break happened. Just before 3 p.m., the City said the leak had been isolated but has not ey lifted the evacuation order.

The evacuation has been ordered for the area of West Melissa Road and East of Fannin Street, officials say. A shelter has been set up for those residents evacuating at the high school cafeteria at 3030 Milrany Lane.

Both Melissa Road and Fannin Street have been closed temporarily. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Atmos Energy issued a statement saying its technicians are on the scene making the necessary repairs.
