Dangerous jump into Lavon Lake is growing concern

In an instant lives changed after a life was lost. Ibrahim Malik drowned after jumping off a train bridge at Lavon Lake on Wednesday.

COLLIN COUNTY -- In an instant lives changed after a life was lost. Ibrahim Malik drowned after jumping off a train bridge at Lavon Lake on Wednesday.

Walking on that bridge or even on the tracks is off-limits. It is railroad property. Not even 24 hours after the tragedy News 8 witnessed people on those tracks.

"I don't know if it is an adrenaline rush or what it is for these kids, but it is dangerous," said Amy Cortez of Nevada Volunteer Fire Department.

Connie Underwood has lived in the area 16 years and knows the place very well. She tells her kids that that bridge is off-limits.

"There's just really tight trails and they are worn out trails so they look like trails to take," said Underwood.

The tracks belong to Kansas City Southern Railroad. It is aware that people trespass. A spokesperson said in a statement, "In recent years barricades were placed on the roads leading to the trestle."

News 8 does not know what path Malik and his friends took on Wednesday, but neighbors say there are few pathways to the bridge. Last year at around the same time another person had jumped from the bridge and broke their leg, according to the Nevada Fire Department.

Kansas City Southern Railroad reminds people that being on the tracks or on the bridge is trespassing and unsafe and that people could face serious fines for doing so.
