Collin County judge: Paxton prosecution team should quit

'Do you want gold-plated justice... or true justice?'
Collin County Judge Keith Self said the team prosecuting Attorney General Ken Paxton should resign.

McKINNEY — It is a case that has become more convoluted as time passes.

On Monday, behind closed doors, Collin County Commissioners met to decide how to pay three special prosecutors in the securities fraud cases against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The bill from the three prosecutors has already reached $254,000. The county had budgeted just $100,000.

"Depending on the timing of how this all unrolls, unless we change the format, this could add up real fast," Collin County Judge Keith Self said, adding that the county has very little "discretion" in the matter.

On Monday, by a 3-2 vote, commissioners agreed to pay the bill. But Self made a strong statement, asking that the three special prosecutors resign.

"I'm asking that we take the elements of a show trial out of this entire thing," he said.

Self would like for a board of district judges, with the help of a regional district attorney, assign new regional district attorneys. The judge said this would dramatically lower the costs to the county.

He also asked that the board reach out to the state securities investigator, who the judge believes lives in Collin County.

"Do you want gold-plated justice... or true justice?" Self asked.
