PLANO, Texas — The city of Plano is growing at a fast pace and Children's Health is working to keep up with the pace.
Children's Health is matching that growth, opening a new tower at Children’s Medical Center Plano in December. The expansion will more than double the size of the campus.
“We want to be ready and able to take care of them {children} closer to home,“ said Vanessa Walls, the Chief Market Executive with Children's Health.
The eight-story tower is 395,000 square feet. They’ve also added 140 new inpatient beds, tripling the Plano campus bed count.
Walls said this expansion is needed because of the city's continuous growth.
“Specifically, in the DFW area, the population of pediatrics in this community is expected to double by the year 2050 and we want to be able to support our community as it grows.”
A scheduled tour showed more of the 48 emergency department rooms and 12 operating rooms.
Graham Torres, the vice president of facilities operations said along with the expansion, they’ve upgraded about 70,000 square feet of the existing hospital.
Torres said the expanded specialty programs include cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, orthopedics and neurology.
Every floor is “Texas-themed” and is inspired by an animal.
“It's just a fun, interactive way to try and help distract kids and bring a little joy to the facility,” Torres said.
The hospital is expected to open on Dec. 10. The project broke ground back in October 2021.
