CEDAR HILL, Texas — A chase suspect was hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire with Cedar Hill and Duncanville police officers on Wednesday night, police officials said.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The incident started around 8:10 p.m. in the 300 block of North Joe Wilson in Cedar Hill when Cedar Hill police were attempting to locate a man with active warrants.
Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Gerail Fuewell. The department said Fuewell had active warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, family violence, and burglary of a habitation with intent to commit another felony.
Shortly after arriving at the scene, police began chasing Fuewell in his vehicle. Duncanville PD assisted in the chase when the suspect entered their jurisdiction on Wheatland Rd.
The chase lasted about six minutes before ending in the 8000 block of Marvin D. Love Freeway in Dallas. In dashcam video released by Cedar Hill PD, Fuewell is seen opening his car door and then firing at officers in their vehicles while crossing Wheatland Rd.
Police said Fuewell exchanged gunfire with both Cedar Hill and Duncanville officers. One Cedar Hill officer and one Duncanville officer returned fire, striking Fuewell, police said. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
A Dallas PD source confirmed that Fuewell was shot in the shoulder and back.
Since the chase ended in Dallas jurisdiction, the Dallas Police Department Special Investigation Unit is investigating the shooting. The Dallas County DA Office will oversee the investigation.
Fuewell faces numerous charges including felony evading motor vehicle.
