Beloved business owner killed in Fourth of July shooting in Fort Worth

Family members say Latasha Hymond died after a shooting at a 4th of July block party on Castleman and Comanche Street in Fort Worth.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Across the intersection of Castleman and Comanche Street in Fort Worth, used fireworks are a reminder of what happened on the Fourth of July.

"It was fun. It started off great. Everybody was coming out, cooking out in their front yard," said Lizbeth, a neighbor. "They started shooting and everything just went downhill from there."

The 16-year-old girl was with her family on their front porch when they heard rapid gunfire. "I was running into my house, grabbing my [3-year-old] brother, pulling him inside, and that's when everyone started running, hiding in people's houses."

Fort Worth Police Department was already monitoring the area. They confirmed that 200 to 300 people had taken over the block. Police said fireworks, which are illegal in Fort Worth, were being set off toward homes on the street.

Latasha Hymond was streaming live on Facebook on Castleman Street. Family members said the 39-year-old makeup artist and business owner was killed in the crossfire.

Her cousin, Pastor Felton Jenkins, found out in the morning about her death. "She is sweet. She is my angel," said Jenkins. "Every time we see each other, it's a hug, it's a kiss, it's a smile, dance, you name it. We are going to cheer each other up. She was loved by everybody."

He spends every day as a community leader fighting against gun violence, but this time he said the pain is personal.

Two more shooting victims survived, according to police. They said another person died after a medical emergency. At this point, police believe there are multiple suspects.

"Come on Fort Worth," said Pastor Jenkins. "This is real. Stop these block parties." He hopes people who know what happened will come forward so the suspects can be arrested.

To Lizbeth, hearing gunshots on her street is nothing new. "You grow up with it, you kind of get used to it," said the teenager. But she is disheartened that the celebration turned into a deadly night.
