Bringing the Lone Star Brewery back to life

SAN ANTONIO -- A piece of Texas history could be getting a multi-million dollar makeover.

SAN ANTONIO -- A piece of Texas history could be getting a multi-million dollar makeover.

Lone Star Brewery in south San Antonio used to be a gathering spot, and developers want to bring it back to life.

"We definitely want to tie that history into the site," said Adam Schneider, the president of Aqualand Development.

For nearly 20 years the building has sat empty, but the Lone Star Beer legacy hasn't faded. Still a popular beer, the building was home to the first large mechanized brewery in Texas, founded in 1883.

"It's all about bringing people back to downtown," said Schnieder, who is also working with CBL & Associates Properties.

The vision is to transform 32 acres into stores, restaurants, a movie theater, and a place that could attract local breweries and chefs, building off of the momentum in Southtown.

"We want to have that balanced use where people could come spend a weekend here and not even see all the different things and activities there are to do," Schneider said.

The price tag could reach around $300 million as a rough estimate. The developers are still working on the funding details.

"We hear all these great stories that people have connections to the site, come out as kids, sitting with their parents having a root beer,” Schneider said. “So we want them to be able to come back and see those areas that they have memories of.”

The developers say that most of the building is in good condition, so most of it will look like the old brewery that many know, but with improvements.

They will eventually go before city council and are hoping to break ground next year.

They did say that the city has been briefed on each phase of the project.
