BEDFORD, Texas — UPDATE: The gas leak has been stopped, but Atmos is still working to permanently fix the line.
An elementary school in Bedford was evacuated after a construction crew hit a nearby gas line, causing a leak, officials say.
The city of Bedford says the leak started in the area of Harwood Road, where a contractor hit a four-inch gas line. Atmos arrived at about 11:27 a.m., and nearby structures were evacuated, including Meadow Creek Elementary.
Bedford ISD said the elementary students were moved to Harwood Junior High.
In a statement, Atmos Energy said a construction crew unrelated to Atmos was working at the intersection when they damaged a natural gas pipeline.
Along with the school, the Bedford Fire Department evacuated a nearby apartment complex, Atmos said.
Atmos technicians are still working to permanently repair the line, but the gas leak has been stopped.
According to Bedford PD, both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of Harwood Road are back open.
This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
