ARLINGTON - The city council in Arlington unanimously approved two resolutions on Tuesday to send a $1 billion proposal for a new Texas Rangers retractable roof stadium to voters in November.
The vote is the next step in a rapidly developing plan to have the Rangers playing in a new stadium by 2021 and extend the club's commitment to Arlington through 2054.
Arlington and the Rangers announced on Friday a plan to construct the stadium using the existing financing plan voters approved 2004 to construct the Cowboys home at AT&T Stadium, which is scheduled to be paid off in 2021.
Supporters of the plan filled council chambers on Tuesday night, with 56 signing up in support and nine opposed.
Arlington votes supported a bond election for the Rangers in 1991 to construct what is now Globe Life Park, which opened in 1994.
The election to approve the stadium plan will be November 8, 2016.
