Allen voters approve propositions worth $442 million, bringing improvements to several schools

Ford Middle School is one of seven campuses that will be fully renovated through the bonds.

ALLEN, Texas — Ford Middle School was originally built in 1982. Over the years, the school has received the necessary maintenance updates, but more is needed.

Doug Wilhelm, principal of the school, said the building has infrastructure issues.

“We have the lockers that started separating from the wall," Wilhelm said. "Some of the doors aren’t able to close properly because of the foundation shift, and gaps between the walls and the floor.”

Wilhelm said classroom sizes are much bigger, and students need more space for creative learning.

Earlier this week, voters made that possible by approving two out of three bonds worth more than $442 million. More than 98% of the dollar amount in the bond proposal was approved by voters.

Ford Middle School is one of seven campuses that will be fully renovated through the bonds. Improvements will include renovations to the campus, safety and security enhancements, transportation upgrades, the construction of a multi-purpose activity center, and other necessary capital project needs.

Allen ISD Chief Communications Director David Hicks said along with the improvements to the school, it will finally get its own track and turf field for students. Hicks said students currently have to be bussed to the high school to practice or compete.

“It has been a push of the district for a long time in order to bring Ford Middle School up to that level,” said Hicks.

Wilhelm said their goal is to give students the best education possible, and that includes making sure they have the best facility.
