9-month-old killed in crash was unrestrained in vehicle that was over capacity, Arlington police say

The crash happened Sunday afternoon on Interstate 20. Police said they learned Tuesday morning that the child had died.

ARLINGTON, Texas — A 9-month-old boy has died after a crash on Interstate 20 Sunday afternoon, and police in Arlington said investigators believe the child was unrestrained in the vehicle.

Police said they responded to the crash just before 2 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of the highway near U.S. 287.

According to police, an SUV had veered in front of an 18-wheeler, which caused the semi to hit the back of the SUV. The SUV went off the road and rolled over multiple times, police said.

Police said there were seven people in the SUV, including the 9-month-old, but that the vehicle was designed to seat five people.

Police said investigators believe the child was sitting in an adult passenger's lap and was ejected in the crash. The child was hospitalized, but police said they learned Tuesday morning that he had died.

Five other passengers in the SUV were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The driver of the SUV and driver of the 18-wheeler were not seriously injured.

Police said investigators are looking into the cause of the crash, including why the SUV veered in front of the 18-wheeler.
