VAN, Texas — A litter of 10 newborn puppies were found in a wire crate without access to food or water in Van on Wednesday, according to a news release by the SPCA of Texas.
The organization, through an anonymous donor, is now offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
The Van Police Department responded to a car wash near Cedar and Main streets at 7 p.m. Wednesday and found the puppies.
“Abandoning animals can be so dangerous, especially in the extreme weather that we’ve been experiencing recently," said SPCA of Texas Chief Investigator, Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit Courtney Burns. "Thankfully these puppies were discovered quickly, and we were able to get them some help before it was too late.
Officers took care of the puppies overnight and then called the SPCA, which picked up the puppies Thursday and took them to the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center where they are being evaluated and are receiving veterinary care.
“For someone to abandon these helpless, newborn puppies is outrageous,” Burns said. “Once their health is stable, we have trained and devoted fosters who will make loving homes for them until they are old enough to be adopted into forever homes.”
In Texas, a person can be charged with animal cruelty for abandoning animals without reasonable care and access to food, water and shelter.
