DALLAS — A 22-year-old man died after he was shot along Interstate 35E in Dallas over the weekend, police said Tuesday.

Elian Murrugarra was identified as the victim, according to a police news release.

Police said the shooting happened around 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, on southbound I-35E near Woodall Rodgers Freeway. Officers had been called to a hospital, where they learned that the victim, Murrugarra, was a passenger in a car that crashed into a vehicle on the highway.

As Murrugarra and the driver pulled over, a suspect shot into their vehicle, striking Murrugarra, police said. Police did not say if the suspected shooter was in the vehicle Murrugarra's car crashed into, or if the shooter was in another vehicle.

Murrugarra was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He died Monday, police said.

No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified. More information about the shooting was not released.
