MINERAL WELLS, Texas — After a tragic incident in Mineral Wells, law enforcement is stepping up its warnings about gun safety.
A 13-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a firearm while his parents weren't home.
The incident happened on Dec. 29 in the 1600 block of Northwest 3rd Avenue in Mineral Wells. The boy was taken to the hospital and later died from his injuries on Jan. 1, according to the Mineral Wells Police Department.
Investigators are still trying to figure out how the boy got his hands on the gun and who owns the weapon.
"We are still trying to confirm how this child came to be in possession of this firearm. This is a tragic incident, and the child's family did not own firearms," said Mineral Wells Police Chief Tim Denison.
When officers responded to the call the boy's 10-year-old sibling was also inside the home at the time of the incident.
Denison is issuing a stern warning to parents who own firearms.
"It is important to teach your children about gun safety," said Denison. "For the families that do have firearms, it is your responsibility as a gun owner to keep them locked up and out of reach of a child. It is also the law."
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
