60 years after his assassination, historic JFK memorabilia sold for tens of thousands in auction

DALLAS — 60 years after it happened, people still can't stop thinking about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963 in Dallas. 

The monumental event spurred the creation of countless books, movies, museums and more tributes to the late president. And just this month, in time with the anniversary of the assassination, tens of thousands of dollars were spent on historic memorabilia connect to Kennedy and his assassination. 

More than 70 items were up for bid, most of them receiving bids in the thousands. The items up for auction included photographs, letters, autographed books, signed documents, business and credit cards -- all related to either Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald or Jack Ruby. 

The highest-selling item auctioned off was a set of leather swatches from the limo Kennedy was driving in when he was fatally shot. Faded blood stains can still be seen on the leather. It sold for $46,865.

Some other interesting items auctioned off include the door to Jack Ruby's apartment (sold for $2,125), a collection of paperclips and rubber bands from Kennedy's Oval Office desk (sold for 4,038), Kennedy's plate from his last "official" dinner (sold for 4,441) and the bullet Ruby fired from the gun that shot Oswald (sold for $18,568).
