State health officials have sent a letter to parents warning that their children might have been exposed to mumps at a recent cheerleading competition in Dallas.
A person at the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championship had mumps, officials learned. The competition was Feb. 23-25 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center downtown.
The person with mumps was from another state, and officials have not identified any connected cases in Texas, said Chris Van Deusen, spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Mumps is a contagious virus with symptoms that include swollen or tender salivary glands, low-grade fever, fatigue and muscle aches. Mumps is usually spread through saliva and respiratory droplets from when a person with the virus coughs and sneezes.
