Scarborough Renaissance Festival makes clear it's "in no way associated" with fair in new HBO docuseries

“Ren Faire” a three-part HBO docuseries, about the Texas Renaissance Festival near Houston, premiered its first episode Sunday.

WAXAHACHIE, Texas — The Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie wants folks to know it’s not the festival featured in the new HBO docuseries “Ren Faire.”

“Scarborough Renaissance Festival is in no way associated with the Texas Renaissance Festival currently being featured in the HBO docuseries ‘Ren Faire,’” a post by the Scarborough Renaissance Festival on social media Monday says.

The Scarborough Renaissance Festival’s 2024 season ran from April 6 to May 27. The themed festival is set in a re-created 16th Century English village with entertainment including jousts, bird exhibitions and more, with 100+ actors playing everyone from royalty to peasants and 200 shops.

“Ren Faire” a three-part HBO docuseries, about the Texas Renaissance Festival near Houston, premiered its first episode Sunday, with the other two episodes to follow this Sunday.

As depicted in “Ren Faire”, founder George Coulam has reigned over the Texas Renaissance Festival for half a century. The documentary follows what happens when Coulam decides to step down and choose that festival’s next heir.

“Blending verité with fantasy, the three-part docu-series Ren Faire invites you behind the curtain of the famed Texas festival to reveal a tense succession battle that ascends to Shakespearean heights,” the documentary’s website reads.

The post from Scarborough Festival, though, clearly sought to distinguish the two fairs.

“The culture depicted in this series is NOT the culture found at Scarborough Renaissance Festival. We are an organization that takes great pride in producing a family-friendly Festival and providing a positive and safe environment for our patrons and participants through professionalism, respect and inclusion."
