FORT WORTH — W.P. McLean Middle School in Fort Worth is upping its security measures after a student reported an incident with a stranger near one of the school's entrances Wednesday morning.
The student told the school that a man in a hooded sweatshirt wielded a knife and cut the child's clothes near the south entrance to the school. The student did not suffer any physical injury in the incident that occurred during morning drop-off.
Fort Worth police received a report of a man trying to stab a student with a knife around 8:45 a.m.
In a letter to parents, the school's principal assured families that safety is a priority.
"I want you to know that addition police, as well as the McLean staff, will continue to have a visible presence during dismissals and arrivals," the letter from principal John Engel reads. "We take the safety of our students, our employees, and visitors to our campus very seriously."
In addition to more security personnel, Engel is urging parents and students to use one entrance during arrivals and dismissals.
Fort Worth PD was investigating the incident.
Parents are now required to drop their children off by the school's front door starting at 8:45 a.m., according to Engel's letter. The letter says a free before- and after-school program exists for students who need to arrive earlier.
The principal also encourages parents to talk to their children about strangers and safety, and to tell children to "say something if they see something" suspicious.
McLean Middle School is located on Stadium Drive south of the TCU campus in Fort Worth.
