MCKINNEY, Texas — There are currently more than 23,000 students enrolled in McKinney ISD schools. Even though the 2024-2025 school year just started, district leaders are already planning for years to come.
“We just see the housing market boom and with that brings so many great McKinney ISD families,” said Dr. Shelly Spaulding the Assistant Superintendent.
Last month, board members approved the creation of a new committee to prepare for the district's expected growth. It's called the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee which will be comprised of 50-60 members.
“It's important to us to get, to invite the feedback of our community, really to make the decisions for what's best for McKinney ISD, not just for the next year, next three years, five years, 20 years,” said Spaulding. “This community is really going to be charged with that task.”
During Thursday’s board meeting, they revised the language around how many nominees each board member can recommend.
“What we know we need to do is get our communities involved in how we proceed going forward,” she said.
Once selected Spaulding said the members will be tasked with examining the district's 31 buildings and seeing how they could be expanded on, or if more buildings are needed.
“We want McKinney ISD parents and staff members, we're going to include students on the committee as well,” said Spaulding.
The district said during the 2019-2020 school year, enrollment declined by 1,220 students following the global COVID pandemic.
Looking ahead 10 years from now, the district’s demographer is projecting student enrollment to increase to 27,704 by the 2033-2034 school year.
“We just have to evolve and as we grow and change, we want to evolve with it,” she said.
