DALLAS — Dallas Independent School District will again require students to carry clear or mesh backpacks next year, the district announced Tuesday.
The clear backpack requirement extends to students in pre-Kingerten through high school, according to a press release from DISD.
The district will provide each student with a clear backpack at no cost, according to the release.
"Please note that a clear backpack policy alone does not ensure complete security," the release states. "As a reminder, Dallas ISD’s Comprehensive Safety Plan is available at dallasisd.org/safety."
Clear backpacks are preferred but mesh is also allowed, the release states. Students will be allowed to carry a non-clear pouch to store personal items including cell phones, money and hygiene products.
Parents can also purchase a preferred clear or mesh backpack, the release states.
The school district started requiring clear or mesh backpacks for 6 through 12 graders in 2022. In 2023, the school district extended the requirement to include all students.
