Denton police officer honored for saving newborn’s life

The family was on the way to the hospital to deliver the baby, but they didn't make it.

DENTON, Texas — On Tuesday, Officer Yancy Green was on patrol.

“I had been dispatched to another call for a suspicious person,” he said. That’s when a more urgent call came in for an unresponsive person. Green happened to be right at the intersection where the call came from on the 900 block of University Drive.

He pulled into a parking lot and found a man waving him down. “He said his wife told him when they were at the stop light that the baby is coming, and when he pulled into the parking lot, sure enough, the baby came,” said Officer Green. The family was on the way to the hospital to deliver the baby, but they didn’t make it.

Green said he found the mom and infant in the back seat of the vehicle. The baby still had his umbilical cord attached and wasn’t breathing. The child was turning blue.

“I just started giving him back pats,” said Green. “That child has so much he can come to and grow up to see the world.” As a father himself, Green knew this child deserved a future.

The baby started breathing. Officer Green saves his life.

On Friday, Green was given an award by the Denton Police Department. He said he feels good about getting the award, but serving others is his calling. “I am happy to do it,” said the officer.
