'Your mom loved you dearly.' | Sister of a teen mother shot dead at an Irving hotel has a message for her nephews

"She was really caring and made sure her sons were taken care of," Breanna Bettis said.

IRVING, Texas — A fight inside an Irving hotel room involving two women and a man escalated to gunfire and claimed the life of a mother of two.

Just before 9 p.m. on Friday, Irving PD responded to a noise complaint at the Clarion Inn & Suites DFW North in the 4700 block of Plaza Drive. Once officers arrived they discovered 19-year-old Zenri McGee suffering from gunshot wounds.

McGee was a mother of two young boys.

McGee's older sister, Breanna Bettis, told WFAA Monday that McGee spared no expense in having fun with her children. She loved making dance TikTok videos with her 3-year-old son Timothy.

But now Bettis is in charge of planning her little sister's funeral.

"You call the medical examiner's office, asking for your baby sister, and they say yeah, she's here. And it's like unreal, it's just really emotional," Bettis said.

Irving PD said during the fight Cedric Campbell shot McGee who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Campbell was arrested and faces Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Bettis shared with WFAA how much McGee loved her two sons, 3-year-old Timothy and his little brother 1-year-old Demarco. She also talked about how much the two boys have helped her focus on making a better life for herself and them. The two sisters spent almost every day together and even more so recently.

"She was really caring and made sure her sons were taken care of. If she did need help, she would reach out to me," Bettis said.

Now, Bettis is reaching out.

She started a GoFundMe to pay for McGee's funeral and care for her nephews.

The unexpected shooting death of her sister has been tough on her as the older sister who is expected to handle everything. Bettis and her husband have five children and expecting another baby in August.

Although McGee's life was cut short at a young age, she is determined to make sure her nephews know as much as possible about their mother when they get older.

"I can show them videos with their mother, pictures with her and her kids. She had a lot of dancing videos with him and videos with DeMarco," Bettis said. "I can just say your mom loved you dearly."
