Young man, 18, shoots, kills brother, Garland police say

Police say an 18-year-old Garland male turned himself into police after he allegedly shot and killed his brother.

GARLAND, Texas — An 18-year-old man was charged with the murder of his brother after he allegedly shot him dead early Monday morning at a Garland home.

According to police, authorities were first called to the scene in the 200 block of East Taylor Drive after they received a report of a gunshot wound victim at about 4 a.m. Monday.

Upon their arrival, paramedics with the Garland Fire Department found 26-year-old Ryan Christopher Smart wounded inside the home. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

Police said investigators discovered Smart was involved in a dispute with his brother, Brendan Demarcus Edwards, who allegedly pulled out a gun and fired the fatal shot. Edwards fled the scene but later turned himself into police.

Garland police said an investigation into the shooting continues.
