WYLIE, Texas — A 30-year-old Garland resident has been charged with the death of a man who overdosed on fentanyl last month, police say.
The suspect, Kennedy Kirby, was charged with murder following the fatal overdose of Jacob Bowers on Jan. 11.
"Fentanyl is a growing problem in our country," Wylie Police Chief Anthony Henderson said in a statement. "The Wylie Police Department will thoroughly investigate all cases of overdose and hold those persons responsible for placing fentanyl in our community."
Police say detectives found Kirby had used an unsuspecting Uber delivery driver to deliver a package containing fentanyl to the victim.
Wylie investigators and Dallas police arrested Kirby on Feb. 6 at an apartment he was located in. During a search of the apartment, police say they found about 22.3 grams of "raw fentanyl, as well as 1,436 M30 fentanyl pills, 1,054.50 V/2090 Xanax fentanyl pills, drug paraphernalia items consistent with delivering illegal drugs, electronics, a handgun and cash.
Kirby was charged with manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance, which was upgraded to a murder charge following the release of Bowers' toxicology report.
Police say Kirby is still in the Collin County Detention Facility.
