DALLAS — A 69-year-old Dallas man told police in an interview he shot and killed his wife of 47 years because he suspected her of cheating on him, an arrest warrant affidavit shows.
Officers were called to the 1900 block of Riverway Drive shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday and found Veronica Lopez, 69, had been shot, according to a news release from police.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
Police say Francisco Amaya, 77, was arrested and charged with murder.
Amaya told police in an interview after his arrest that he suspected Lopez of cheating on him after he said her behavior changed after he found messages on her phone, according to the affidavit.
Amaya told police he confronted Lopez about his suspicions, but she denied cheating, the affidavit states.
He told police he took Lopez's phone with him to work earlier this week, and went home to confront her again after he saw more messages, according to the affidavit.
Amaya said he shot Lopez during the confrontation and he began strangling her after he believed the shot didn't kill her, according to the affidavit.
He told police he then put the gun in a drawer and called 911, the affidavit states.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to contact police at frank.serra@dallaspolice.gov.
