MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — A 17-year-old Willis High School student was arrested Tuesday after deputies said he attacked his basketball coach for benching him during a game.
Jevin Allen is charged with assault on a public servant. His older brother, Jarrick Allen, 22, was also arrested and charged with the same crime for joining the attack.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the basketball coach benched Jevin during the Willis High School versus Conroe High School basketball game for his behavior toward the opposing team's player. Jevin Allen and several of his family members were infuriated with the coach's decision. When the team returned to Willis High School, Jevin Allen and his family decided to confront the coach in the parking lot.
Deputies said Jevin Allen and his family started an argument with the basketball coach before Jevin punched the coach in his face. At the same time, Jarrick Allen began attacking the coach, deputies said.
Deputies said it took another coach and several bystanders to break up the fight, and once things deescalated, both brothers ran away.
During an investigation, deputies said they reviewed video surveillance and interviewed witnesses, corroborating the coach's facts. Deputies also saw the coach had injuries to his head, neck, face and arms as a result of the attack.
Deputies eventually found the brothers and arrested them.
Jevin and Jarrick Allen were booked into the Montgomery County Jail but were released after they each posted a $23,000 bond.
The district said in a statement the coach is recovering and the student is no longer enrolled at the school.
"We can confirm the incident did occur, and that the coach is recovering well. The investigation is ongoing, but we did determine that the student's address was no longer valid, so he has been withdrawn from the district. We are deeply saddened by this incident and will not tolerate this behavior from students," the statement said.
