Violent crime continues to trend down citywide, according to DPD presentation

Dallas police administrators presented data to the city's public safety committee on Tuesday showing violent crime is down 13.30% overall.

DALLAS — Dallas Police Department administrators gave a presentation to the City of Dallas' public safety committee on Tuesday morning showing that violent crime overall is trending down citywide.

According to data shown through July, the city has seen a 13.30% drop in violent crime compared to the same time last year. And that number has continued to trend down since January 2021, according to a graph provided by DPD. It includes not just the number of victims trending down, but also the number of incidents.

Two huge contributing factors to the drop in violent crime are decreases in aggravated assaults and in homicides. DPD data showed aggravated assaults have gone down by 17.99%, and homicides have dropped by 21.29%. There has been one more murder involving family violence than there was as of this time last year.

Robberies are also down by 3.93%, which is 54 less victims than last July. And while individual robberies are down 9.41%, there has been a significant increase in business robberies of about 20.88%. DPD Deputy Chief Stephen Williams said 37% of these business robberies are incidents of shoplifting that escalate to robberies.

There are also less victims of gun crime than there were this time last year, data shows, with victims in high-risk areas down by 28.1%, and victims citywide down by 13.5%.

Williams said there has been improved offense and calls for service counts at all nine current risk terrain focus areas, which are what police have identified to be areas with the highest risk for criminal activity, according to the DPD's violent crime reduction plan.
