2 Dallas HS football players injured in drive-by shooting, police say; Friday classes canceled

Dallas PD says officers were called to a shooting along the 520 block of Bonnie View Road near Cedar Crest Golf Course Thursday evening.

DALLAS — Two high school football players were hospitalized Thursday after they were injured in a drive-by shooting in Dallas while riding home from practice with their coach, police officials and the coach told WFAA.

Dallas Independent School District officials then canceled classes Friday at Roosevelt High School, where the players attend, "due to a credible threat."

Dallas police say officers were called to a shooting near the Cedar Crest Golf Course on Thursday evening, about a mile away from Roosevelt High School, which is located in the 520 block of Bonnie View Road.

Roosevelt football coach Terrence Lowery told WFAA he was driving two players home from practice when someone pulled alongside their vehicle and started shooting. Lowery said he immediately turned around and headed back to the school.

Lowery said the player sitting in the passenger seat was shot in the back of the arm and shoulder, and the player sitting in the backseat was shot in the neck. Lowery was not injured but shaken up saying a bullet went through one of the headrests.

Lowery confirmed to WFAA that both players are sophomores at the school.

The teens were taken to Methodist Hospital in stable condition and expected to be OK, police said.

When school officials canceled classes for Friday, they asked students and staff "to refrain from coming to campus" and that they'd release more information when available.
