"These people owe us some time": Dallas District attorney says 2 violent felons who were mistakenly released from prison are back behind bars

Two of four violent felons who were mistakenly released instead of being transferred from federal prison to TDCJ are in custody, the DA says.

DALLAS — Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot says he’s been on a mission to get four violent criminals back behind bars.

”Because I have no idea if these people are going go back and commit more crimes,” said Creuzot.

This past summer, WFAA first brought the case of Nicolas Monarrez to the D.A.’s attention.

Monarrez kidnapped, tortured, and murdered Linoshka Torres and her boyfriend, Luis Campos, in 2007, officials say.

In 2021, he was supposed to begin serving a prison sentence for their murders in the Texas Department of Corrections after finishing a separate sentence in a federal narcotics case.

Instead of transferring back to Dallas County, the federal government mistakenly deported him, according to Creuzot.

”There was not a hold or detainer of any kind on these people, so when they finished their sentence where they were, they were let go onto the streets,” said Creuzot.

After our story on Monarrez, the D.A.’s office did an audit to see if other violent criminals were mistakenly released, and they found three more.

”The situation here is we have recognized the mistakes, and we tried to correct them," Creuzot said.

The D.A. says he found 32-year-old Darrius Mosely, who was supposed to serve a 20-year sentence in a Texas prison, and 58-year-old John Washington Pauley, who was supposed to serve a 46 years for aggravated robbery.

But both were released from federal prison instead of properly being transferred back to Dallas County and have been out for nearly a decade, officials say.

”These people owe us their time, and when you do 46 years that’s 23 calendar years before you can be eligible for parole,” said Creuzot.

Mosely and Pauley are both back behind bars, but Monarrez and another inmate whose name has not been released are still out, and the D.A. is searching for answers on how this happened.

The District Attorney says Mosely was arrested in Dallas while Pauley was arrested in San Francisco.  Records show Pauley had crack cocaine in his possession when he was picked up.

Creuzot also believes there may be other cases across the state and he is working with TDCJ to fix the problem.
