FORTWORTH Sobs were heard from observers at a juvenile court as details of the beating death of 5-year-old Sida Osman were read aloud Wednesday morning.
A 14-year-old boy, who was not identified by name because of his age, was sentenced to 23 years as part of a capital murder plea deal.
According to police, the teen hit Sida Osman multiple times with a bowling ball. Officers said the teen admitted he knocked Osman to the ground, straddled the boy and then hit him with the ball 'like spiking a football.' Osman's skull was crushed in the beating.
The young boy disappeared while riding his bike on on June 25. Osman was missing for about 18 hours when the defendant, who was 13 at the time of the murder, led friends to his body in the backyard of a vacant house in the 4800 block of Lois Street.
The only motive given by prosecutors was the teen was upset with Osman that June day for 'pestering' him while asking the defendant to accompany him to a store.
After pleading guilty, the defendant turned to the victim's mother, apologized and broke into tears.
The defendant will remain in the juvenile justice system until he's 19, at which time he'll likely be transferred to the adult prison system. However, he could be transferred as early as 16 years of age. He could also be paroled before leaving the juvenile system, however prosecutors said that's unlikely.
